Shopping for a Dell AI laptop got confusing over the last two years. In 2025 Dell dropped famous names like XPS, Inspiron and Latitude. Then, in 2026, XPS came back and the workstation line changed name again. On top of that, not every Dell with “AI” in the listing runs Microsoft’s on device AI features.
Fortunately, this guide clears it up. First, you will see which Dell lines exist today, which models are true AI laptops, and which one fits your work. Prices are Dell US starting prices from late October 2026.
What counts as a Dell AI laptop?
For Windows AI features, the bar is Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC standard: an NPU of 40 TOPS or more, 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Dell’s Copilot+ PC store page uses the same rules. As a result, these laptops run features like Recall, live caption translation and smarter Windows Search on the NPU. Our Copilot+ PC features list explains each one.
There is also a second kind of Dell AI laptop: a workstation with a powerful NVIDIA GPU for developers and data scientists. In other words, these run large models locally, which an NPU alone cannot do.
Dell’s laptop lines in 2026
XPS: back for premium buyers
XPS returned at CES 2026 with the XPS 14 and XPS 16, both using Intel Core Ultra Series 3 chips with NPUs up to 50 TOPS. For example, the XPS 14 is listed on Dell’s site as a Copilot+ PC. In addition, a new XPS 13 starts at just $699.99, but its base model has 8GB of RAM. Its base Intel Core 5 320 chip also has a 16 TOPS NPU, well below the 40 TOPS bar. Therefore, only Core Ultra Series 3 configurations with 16GB or more can meet the Copilot+ bar.
Dell and Dell Plus: everyday laptops
Next, the plain Dell and Dell Plus models replace Inspiron for home and student use. Some Dell 14 Plus and 16 Plus configurations with Intel Core Ultra chips appear on Dell’s Copilot+ list.
Dell Pro: business laptops
Dell Pro replaces Latitude for companies. In addition, these models focus on security, manageability and long support. The Dell Pro 14 Premium with Core Ultra Series 3 sits among Dell’s Copilot+ business laptops.
Dell Pro Precision: AI workstations
Dell is replacing the short lived Pro Max name with Dell Pro Precision. On 7 October 2026, Dell also renamed its desk side AI systems with NVIDIA GB10 and GB300 chips to Dell Pro Precision. Overall, this line is for people who train or run serious AI models.

Dell’s AI software
Dell Pro AI Studio is a free toolkit for business IT teams. Specifically, it helps them deploy AI apps and models that run on the laptop’s NPU, fully offline if needed. According to Dell’s Pro AI Studio page, it needs Windows 11 Pro and an NPU of 40+ TOPS, and nothing comes pre installed.
Dell Optimizer manages battery, cooling and presence detection, such as locking the screen when you walk away. Note that the latest version does not run on Arm based laptops.
Interestingly, Dell itself has toned down its AI marketing. A Dell product head said in January 2026 that buyers are “not buying based on AI.” In practice, battery life, screen and build still matter most, while AI features are a useful bonus.

Dell laptops for running AI models locally
If you want to run large language models or image models on the laptop, focus on the GPU and memory. In particular, two Dell options stand out:
- XPS 16 Creator Edition: the first XPS with NVIDIA RTX Spark, with up to 128GB of unified memory. The $3,799.99 starting model has 32GB. Moreover, Dell says it can run larger AI models without the cloud.
- Pro Max 16 Plus: a workstation with NVIDIA RTX PRO Blackwell graphics. It can even add a discrete Qualcomm AI 100 NPU card with 64GB of AI memory for very large models.
For context on why memory matters so much, read our guides to RTX Spark laptops and running AI locally.
Which Dell AI laptop should you buy?
Students and home users: a Dell 14 Plus, or an XPS 13 with a Core Ultra chip and 16GB of RAM, gives you Copilot+ features without a premium price.
Professionals who want premium design: the XPS 14 is the sweet spot, with a strong Intel chip and a confirmed Copilot+ listing.
Business fleets: choose Dell Pro for security, management tools and Dell Pro AI Studio support.
AI developers and creators: the XPS 16 Creator Edition or a Pro Precision workstation, depending on budget and GPU needs.
Before you buy, check two things on the product page: at least 16GB of RAM, and an NPU of 40 TOPS or more. If you also compare chips, see our Intel Core Ultra laptop guide.
