A Ryzen AI laptop is any notebook built on an AMD chip with “Ryzen AI” in its name. Each of these chips packs three engines in one: Zen CPU cores, Radeon graphics and an XDNA NPU that runs AI tasks. However, the label covers very different machines, from slim office notebooks to heavy laptops that can run large AI models offline. This guide explains how to read AMD’s chip names, what the NPU really does, and how to choose a Ryzen AI laptop that fits the way you work.
What Makes a Ryzen AI Laptop Different
The key part is the NPU, or neural processing unit. For instance, it handles small, steady AI jobs such as background blur on video calls, live captions, noise removal and Windows features like Recall. Because the NPU sips power, these tasks run without draining the battery.
In addition, Microsoft sets a clear bar for its Copilot+ PC features: an NPU rated at 40 TOPS or more, at least 16GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Every Ryzen AI 300 and Ryzen AI 400 chip clears that NPU bar. As a result, most new Ryzen AI laptops can use Copilot+ features out of the box.
Bigger AI work is a different story. For example, running a local chatbot or making AI images leans on the graphics chip and on memory, not the NPU. Our guide to NPU vs GPU explains this split in simple terms.
The Three Ryzen AI Laptop Families in 2026
Ryzen AI 300 (Strix Point)
First, AMD launched this family in 2024. It brought Zen 5 cores and an NPU rated at about 50 TOPS. Today, many of these laptops are still on sale, often at good discounts. So if you find a Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 or Ryzen AI 7 350 model at a low price, it is still a solid Copilot+ PC.
Ryzen AI 400 (Gorgon Point)
AMD announced the Ryzen AI 400 series at CES in January 2026. In short, it is a refresh of Strix Point with higher clock speeds, faster memory support (LPDDR5X up to 8533 MT/s) and a stronger NPU. At the top, the best chip reaches 60 TOPS. Here is the lineup, based on AMD’s launch details:
| Chip | Cores / threads | Graphics | NPU |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen AI 9 HX 475 | 12 / 24 | Radeon 890M | 60 TOPS |
| Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 | 12 / 24 | Radeon 890M | 55 TOPS |
| Ryzen AI 9 465 | 10 / 20 | Radeon 880M | 50 TOPS |
| Ryzen AI 7 450 | 8 / 16 | Radeon 860M | 50 TOPS |
| Ryzen AI 7 445 | 6 / 12 | Radeon 840M | 50 TOPS |
| Ryzen AI 5 435 | 6 / 12 | Radeon 840M | 50 TOPS |
| Ryzen AI 5 430 | 4 / 8 | Radeon 840M | 50 TOPS |
Ryzen AI Max (Strix Halo)
By contrast, this is the power option. Ryzen AI Max chips pair up to 16 CPU cores with a much bigger Radeon GPU and support up to 128GB of unified memory. The NPU is rated at 50 TOPS, but the real draw is memory. Since the GPU can use a large share of that memory, these laptops can load AI models that most other laptops cannot. If you want to run AI locally, a Ryzen AI Max laptop with 64GB or 128GB is one of the few Windows options that makes sense.
Naming Traps to Watch For
Because AMD’s names look alike, read the full chip name before you buy. Watch for these three traps.
- No “AI” in the name. AMD also sells chips such as the Ryzen 5 439 and Ryzen 7 449, built on the same Gorgon Point silicon but without an NPU. They work fine as laptops; however, they do not qualify for Copilot+ features.
- Older chips with small NPUs. Ryzen 7040 and 8040 laptops have NPUs of roughly 10 to 16 TOPS. They are cheap, but they fall well short of the 40 TOPS Copilot+ bar.
- HX does not always mean 60 TOPS. In the 400 series, only the HX 475 reaches 60 TOPS. The HX 470 shares the same CPU and graphics, yet its NPU tops out at 55 TOPS.
Which Ryzen AI Laptop Fits Your Needs
Students and office work
A Ryzen AI 5 430 or 435, or a Ryzen AI 7 445 or 450, is plenty for notes, web apps and video calls. At the very least, choose 16GB of RAM. Still, 32GB is the safer pick, because most thin laptops use soldered memory that you cannot upgrade later.
Creators and light gaming
In this case, pick a Ryzen AI 9 HX 470 or HX 475. Above all, their Radeon 890M graphics handle photo editing, light video work and older games well. For serious gaming or 3D work, look for a model that also has a separate Nvidia RTX GPU.
Developers and local AI users
Instead, go for a Ryzen AI Max laptop with as much memory as you can afford. In general, memory size decides which models you can run, while TOPS figures matter far less. Our guide to the best PC for AI covers how much memory common model sizes need.
Ryzen AI Laptop vs Intel and Snapdragon
On NPU numbers, a Ryzen AI laptop sits near the top for x86 machines. For comparison, Intel’s Core Ultra Series 3 reaches about 50 TOPS, which we explain in our Intel Core Ultra laptop guide. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 chips go up to 80 TOPS; however, they run Windows on Arm, so some older apps and games rely on emulation. Read our Snapdragon X2 Elite laptop guide for the full picture.
Meanwhile, AMD runs standard x86 Windows, so every app and game works as usual. For very heavy AI work, Nvidia’s new RTX Spark laptop chips offer more GPU power, but at a much higher price.
Quick Checklist Before You Buy
- Confirm the chip name includes “Ryzen AI” and check its TOPS rating on AMD’s official laptop processor page.
- Also, look for the Copilot+ PC label if you want Windows AI features.
- Choose 32GB of RAM if you can, and 64GB or more for local AI models.
- Finally, check reviews for battery life and fan noise, since laptop makers tune the same chip very differently.
- Compare prices of Ryzen AI 300 models; they often give the best value.

FAQ
Is a Ryzen AI laptop good for gaming?
Yes, especially for light and older games. The Radeon 890M in top Ryzen AI chips handles many games at 1080p with lower settings. For new demanding titles, however, choose a model with a separate graphics card.
Does every Ryzen AI laptop support Copilot+ features?
Most do, because Ryzen AI 300 and 400 chips have NPUs above 40 TOPS. The laptop also needs at least 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, so check the full spec sheet.
Can a Ryzen AI laptop run AI chatbots offline?
Yes. For example, free tools like Ollama and LM Studio run small models on most Ryzen AI laptops with 16GB to 32GB of RAM. For larger models, a Ryzen AI Max laptop with 64GB or more works much better.
