An AI avatar generator can turn a selfie into a cartoon profile picture, a 3D character or even a talking video presenter. That makes avatars useful for social media, gaming, online courses and business videos.
However, “AI avatar” means two very different things today. In this guide, we explain both types, compare the best AI avatar generator tools as of October 2026, and cover the privacy and consent rules you should follow.
Two types of AI avatars
Profile picture avatars. In short, these are still images in a style you choose, such as anime, 3D cartoon or illustration. You use them on social media, forums or gaming profiles.
Talking video avatars. By contrast, these are lifelike digital presenters that speak your script with matching lip movements. Businesses use them for training videos, product demos and social clips.
The tools, prices and rules differ a lot between the two, so first decide which one you need.
Best AI avatar generator tools for profile pictures
Picsart
Picsart’s AI avatar tool needs just one front facing photo. Each style set gives four avatars, and you can create up to ten sets. In addition, it can make short video avatars. Picsart Pro costs $10.50 a month billed yearly, according to its pricing page.
Lensa
Lensa made AI avatars popular with its Magic Avatars feature, so check the app for its current avatar options. The app subscription costs $7.99 a month or $29.99 a year on the App Store. Notably, Lensa’s privacy policy explains that it trains a temporary copy of an image model on your photos to make the avatars. It then deletes that copy and your original photos, and says it does not use your personal data to train separate AI models.
Canva
Canva’s AI character generator creates characters from a text prompt using Magic Media. It is free to try, and Canva’s terms allow commercial use, though the rights are not exclusive. As a result, it suits logos, mascots and fun profile images.
Apple Image Playground and Genmoji
On recent Apple devices, Image Playground and Genmoji create avatar style images free within daily limits. According to Apple’s support page, they need Apple Intelligence on an iPhone 15 Pro or later model, an iPad mini with A17 Pro, or an iPad or Mac with M1 or newer. Apple says images can be made in virtually any style, and that expanded access will cost a fee in future.
Microsoft Designer
Microsoft Designer offers a free tier with monthly credits for AI images, including avatars. It is a simple option if you already use a Microsoft account.

| Synthesia | 10 minutes, stock avatars, watermark | Starter $19 a month | On paid plans (check limits) |
HeyGen
HeyGen lets free users make three watermarked videos a month, each up to one minute, plus one custom video avatar. The Creator plan costs $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, and adds 1080p export. To create your own avatar, you must record a short consent video, as its help center explains.
Synthesia
Synthesia offers a free plan with 10 minutes of video and stock avatars. The Starter plan costs $19 a month billed monthly, and personal avatars come with paid plans, with the Pro plan listing five. Synthesia’s avatar policy says it creates no avatar without the person’s informed consent, and people can revoke that consent.

Avatar apps that changed in 2026
Some popular avatar apps are gone or have moved:
- Ready Player Me wound down its services on 31 January 2026 after Netflix acquired the company, as TechCrunch reported.
- Bitmoji is no longer a separate app from 30 June 2026. Instead, it lives inside Snapchat, on the web and in a Chrome extension, according to Snapchat’s help page.
Therefore, check that a tool is still active before you build a brand or game profile around it.
Tips for better AI avatars
- Use a clear, front facing photo. For example, good light and a plain background help the AI read your features.
- Try several styles. After all, anime, 3D and illustration styles suit different platforms.
- Keep it recognisable. For work profiles, pick a style that still looks like you.
- Write a clear script for video avatars. In practice, short sentences sound more natural when an avatar speaks them.
- Check the export size. Profile pictures need a square image, while video avatars need the right aspect ratio for each platform.

Privacy and consent rules
Above all, your face is personal data. Before you upload selfies to any AI avatar generator, check how long the company keeps your photos and whether it uses them for training. In addition, follow these simple rules:
- Only use your own face, or faces you have clear permission to use.
- Never create avatars of children without a parent’s permission.
- Do not make a talking avatar of someone else. HeyGen and Synthesia require the person’s own consent for this reason.
- Label AI videos clearly when you publish them, so viewers know the presenter is digital.
If you need a realistic professional photo rather than a stylized avatar, our guide to the AI headshot generator tools covers that.
