Canva AI is the assistant inside Canva that turns a short prompt into a design you can edit. It no longer just writes captions. It can draft full layouts, make images, build small interactive pages and follow your brand style. This guide covers what it does today, what the free plan really gives you, and how to use it well.
What Canva AI is in 2026
Canva announced version 2.0 of its assistant on 16 April 2026 at its Canva Create event in Los Angeles. However, it did not reach everyone on day one. It launched as a research preview for the first one million people who found it on the Canva home page. Canva said wider access would follow in the coming weeks.
The main change is conversational design. You describe an idea, and the tool builds a layered design where every object stays separate. As a result, you can swap one photo or one font without regenerating the whole page.
In addition, Canva added a memory that learns your style over time. The assistant can also connect to Slack, Notion, Gmail and Google Drive, run scheduled tasks and pull web research into a design.
Magic Studio tools you will still see
The older Magic names still live inside the editor. For example, Canva’s help centre still lists Magic Write, Magic Layers and Magic Formulas. So older Magic Studio tutorials still mostly apply.
Canva Code
Canva Code builds interactive experiences from a text prompt. Version 2.0 also imports HTML. So you can bring in a page from another AI tool and edit it visually.
Canva AI free vs Pro: what you really get
Canva sorts its AI tools into three tiers: Standard, Premium and Ultra. Standard covers tools like the Image Upscaler and image generation. Premium covers heavier jobs, such as generating a full design, Magic Layers, Canva Code and the music generator. Ultra covers conversational design in version 2.0.
Here is how the monthly allowance works, according to Canva’s AI access help page:
| Plan | Monthly AI allowance | Ultra tools |
|---|---|---|
| Free | Up to 20 uses in total, Standard or Premium | Not available |
| Pro | Standard not metered; up to 200 Premium uses | Or up to 20 Ultra uses |
| Business and Enterprise | Standard not metered; up to 400 Premium uses | Or up to 40 Ultra uses |
Also, some basic tools do not count toward the limit at all. These include text chat with the assistant, Magic Write, Translate and animations, though fair use rules apply. Note that Canva’s pricing page still showed 200 Standard uses on Free when we checked, so the help page looks newer. On team plans, allowances are per member and not pooled.
On price, the US Canva pricing page lists Pro at US$180 a year for one person. Business costs US$250 per person per year. Prices differ by country, so check your local page before you pay. Pro and Business users can also buy an AI Pass add on for much higher limits.
How to use Canva AI for a social post
- First, open Canva and choose the assistant from the home page.
- Next, write one detailed prompt. Name the platform, the size, the message, the audience and two brand colours.
- Then pick the draft you like most and open it in the editor.
- After that, click any object to change it. Because each element is separate, a new photo will not break the layout.
- Also, apply your Brand Kit. The free plan allows one kit with three colours, while Pro allows five kits.
- Finally, download the post or schedule it. Note that social scheduling is a Pro feature.
For example, try: “Square Instagram post for a coffee shop weekend sale, warm brown colours, bold headline.” A clear prompt like this saves retries.
Turning a prompt into a presentation
The same flow works for slides. Ask for a set number of slides, a topic, a tone and a target audience. Then edit each slide, replace stock images where needed, and check every fact the tool wrote.
Still, plan your prompts on the free plan. Generating a full design is a Premium use, so each fresh attempt draws from your 20 monthly uses. In short, one careful prompt beats five rushed ones.

Honest limits
The free allowance is small. Twenty uses a month is fine for testing, but a weekly content plan will run out fast.
Also, the output still needs a human check. Canva’s terms state it gives no guarantee about the accuracy of AI output. So verify numbers, dates and claims before you publish.
Limits can change, too. Canva’s terms call usage limits “operational controls and not fixed entitlements.” So treat any figure, including ours, as a snapshot.
Finally, AI drafts can look generic. You will usually still adjust spacing, fonts and images by hand.
Licensing and commercial use notes
Canva’s AI Product Terms, effective 16 March 2026, give you broad rights. In general, you own your output and may use it for any lawful purpose. However, there are three important exceptions:
- Library content: If you use AI to edit a photo from the Canva library, you do not own the result. The library licence still applies.
- Audio: You do not own AI audio output. You can use it in personal and commercial projects, but you cannot sell or distribute it on its own.
- Honesty rules: You must not present AI content as human made. You also must not remove provenance or metadata tags from it.
This matters most for brand assets. For example, before you build a logo from library elements, read our guide to the best AI logo generator options. This is a summary, not legal advice.
Canva AI alternatives
Canva is not the only choice. Adobe Express has a free plan with free daily generations. Its Premium plan costs US$9.99 a month and includes 250 generative credits per month.
Meanwhile, design is only half of a posting plan. Our guide to AI social media management tools covers the planning and publishing side.
Bottom line
Canva AI is now a real design assistant, not just a caption writer. It is great for fast social posts, simple slides and quick web pages. However, the free plan gives only 20 AI uses a month, so heavy users will need Pro. Write detailed prompts, check every fact, and read the licence rules before you use output for a brand.
Frequently asked questions
Is Canva AI free?
Yes, with limits. The free plan includes up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses a month, and no Ultra tools. Text chat and Magic Write do not count toward that limit, but fair use rules apply.
Can I use AI images from Canva for commercial work?
In most cases, yes. Canva’s AI terms say you own your output and can use it for any lawful purpose. However, edits of Canva library photos stay under the library licence, and AI audio cannot be sold on its own.
How many AI uses does Canva Pro include?
Pro does not meter Standard tools. It includes up to 200 Premium AI uses or up to 20 Ultra uses a month. You can buy an AI Pass add on if you need more.
