The MacBook Pro OLED is finally real. On 28 October 2026, Apple announced a MacBook Pro with a PROLED XDR Display, and it is the first Mac with a touch screen. However, Apple still sells the regular models, so picking one takes some thought.
This guide covers what changed, what it costs worldwide, and how it compares with the March 2026 M5 Pro and M5 Max model.
What Apple announced on 28 October
Apple’s official announcement lists a 14 inch and a 16 inch model. Together, both use tandem OLED, touch, a Dynamic Island and a thinner, lighter body. In addition, both run macOS 27, which Apple calls Golden Gate.
Pre orders opened on 28 October in 30 countries and regions. Meanwhile, deliveries and store sales begin on Friday, 6 November. Apple India’s newsroom lists Monday, 9 November in its pricing section, though its intro says 6 November.
A day earlier, on 27 October, Apple also launched a cheaper 14 inch MacBook Pro with M6. That model keeps the Liquid Retina XDR screen and has no touch. So do not mix the two up when you shop.
The PROLED XDR display explained
In simple terms, PROLED XDR is Apple’s brand name for a tandem OLED panel. Basically, it stacks two layers of self lit pixels. Because each pixel makes its own light, Apple says there is no blooming or halo around bright objects on dark backgrounds.
Here are the key display numbers from Apple:
- Brightness: up to 2,000 nits peak for both HDR and SDR content.
- Contrast: 10,000,000:1, ten times the Liquid Retina XDR figure.
- Refresh rate: ProMotion from 10Hz up to 120Hz.
- Color: P3 and Adobe RGB, plus over 80% of Rec. 2020.
- Pro tools: factory calibration, reference modes, Genlock support and DICOM presets for nondiagnostic medical viewing.
Also, a nano texture glass option is available for bright rooms. Apple has not listed the pixel resolution yet.
Touch comes to the MacBook Pro OLED
Above all, the headline feature is Touch. Apple built the touch sensor into the panel itself, not on top of it, to cut lag. In addition, a new hinge keeps the screen steady when you tap it.
Apple says its own apps are optimized for touch, including Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro. Third party apps named by Apple include Microsoft Word, Canva, Zoom, Lightroom and Blender. However, Apple says these apps arrive later this year.
Dynamic Island replaces the notch
Moreover, the Dynamic Island now sits at the top of the screen. Also, Apple says it becomes the home for Spotlight, Live Activities and Siri AI.
MacBook Pro OLED chips, battery and ports
The new laptop uses M5 Pro or M5 Max, not M6. These are the same chip families Apple launched in the March 2026 MacBook Pro. According to MacRumors, both have an 18 core CPU, with up to 20 GPU cores on M5 Pro and up to 40 on M5 Max.
Beyond that, memory goes up to 128GB and storage up to 16TB. Also, Apple says M5 Max can run large language models with hundreds of billions of parameters on device.
Next, battery life is rated at up to 24 hours, and fast charging reaches 50% in about 30 minutes. For ports, you get three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI, an SDXC slot, MagSafe and a headphone jack. In addition, WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 6 come from Apple’s N1 chip.
Finally, the body is lighter. The 14 inch model weighs 3 pounds, while the 16 inch model weighs 4 pounds.

MacBook Pro OLED vs the M5 Pro and M5 Max model
Apple still lists the Liquid Retina XDR model with M5 Pro and M5 Max on its site. So what does the extra money buy? The table below uses Apple’s specs and US launch prices from March 2026.
| Feature | PROLED XDR model (Oct 2026) | Liquid Retina XDR model (Mar 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Panel | Tandem OLED with touch | Mini LED, no touch |
| Peak brightness | 2,000 nits HDR and SDR | 1,600 nits HDR |
| Contrast | 10,000,000:1 | 1,000,000:1 |
| Screen sizes | 14.2 and 16.3 inches | 14.2 and 16.2 inches |
| Chips | M5 Pro, M5 Max | M5 Pro, M5 Max |
| Weight (14 / 16 inch) | 3 lb / 4 lb | 3.5 lb / 4.7 lb |
| External displays on M5 Pro | Up to 3 | Up to 2 |
| Top of screen | Dynamic Island | Notch |
| Starting price (14 / 16 inch, M5 Pro) | $2,899 / $3,399 | $2,199 / $2,699 |
In short, the chips match, but you pay about $700 more for the M5 Pro versions and $900 more for M5 Max. That money buys the screen, touch, a lighter body and better external display support.
Who should buy the MacBook Pro OLED
First, buy it if your work lives on the screen. For example, video editors, colorists and photographers gain from true blacks, 2,000 nit highlights and Adobe RGB coverage. Also, people who sketch, mark up PDFs or present often will enjoy Touch.
Similarly, it makes sense if you still use an M1 or Intel Mac. If you run local AI models, our guide to the best MacBook for AI work explains how much memory to pick.
Who should skip it
On the other hand, skip it if you bought an M5 Pro or M5 Max MacBook Pro this year. The speed is the same, so you would mainly pay for the display. Also, for writing, coding or study, the M6 model starts at $1,999.

Bottom line
Overall, the new laptop brings OLED, touch, the Dynamic Island and a lighter body. However, its chips are no faster than the March models. Pre orders are open now, and it arrives from 6 November in most launch countries.
