The T Mobile SpaceX deal that some investors hoped for is not happening. On the October 28, 2026 earnings call, T Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan said he sees no room for a wholesale network deal with SpaceX. However, your T Satellite texting is not going away. Here is what happened, why it happened, and what it means for your phone.
What happened with the T Mobile SpaceX deal
T Mobile reported its third quarter 2026 results on October 28. You can read the official results release on the SEC website. On the call, Gopalan was asked about an MVNO arrangement with SpaceX.
An MVNO, or mobile virtual network operator, sells phone service over another company’s network. Gopalan said he sees no room for one with SpaceX, either for consumers or for physical and edge AI.
So the T Mobile SpaceX deal “rejection” in the headlines is a public no from the CEO. Reports do not confirm that SpaceX sent a formal contract that T Mobile turned down. Also, no regulator blocked anything. This is a business choice by T Mobile.
It is not the first time either. Gopalan questioned a Starlink MVNO at a Morgan Stanley conference in March. He then repeated that view on the April earnings call.
Why T Mobile said no
Gopalan uses a simple test. A wholesale deal must bring new customers, new sales channels or new abilities. In short, he asks if it gives T Mobile access to “incremental TAM”, which means a bigger total market. In his view, a SpaceX MVNO adds none of that.
He also played down satellite as a product. He has said T Satellite, which SpaceX powers, made up just 0.0002% of T Mobile’s total network usage, based on May data. Earlier this year, he said most satellite use came from national parks.
There is a bigger reason too. SpaceX now looks like a future rival, not just a partner. In May 2026, the FCC approved its purchase of about 65 MHz of spectrum from EchoStar. SpaceX plans to use it for a next generation network that connects directly to phones.
Also, Grain Management agreed to sell SpaceX a nationwide 800 MHz spectrum portfolio, pending FCC approval. Reports say SpaceX is seeking access to at least 80,000 US cell sites as well. Gopalan said it is now hard to call SpaceX just a satellite provider.
Meanwhile, rivals agree with him. Verizon CEO Dan Schulman said he sees no benefit in an MVNO deal with any satellite provider. AT&T CEO John Stankey pointed to the spectrum and indoor coverage that big carriers already own.
Does the T Mobile SpaceX deal news change T Satellite?
No. T Satellite keeps running. Gopalan said he is “very happy to look at a resale arrangement” for products like T Satellite. That is exactly how the current service works: T Mobile resells satellite texting that runs on Starlink satellites.
So if you pay for T Satellite, or get it free with your plan, nothing changes today. The no only covers SpaceX using T Mobile’s ground network to sell its own phone plans.
How T Satellite works today
For clarity, here are the key facts from T Mobile’s official T Satellite page. We checked them on 30 October 2026.
| Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Price | $10 per month per line as an add on; cancel anytime in the T Life app |
| Included free | Experience Beyond, Experience Beyond 2.0, Better Value and Go5G Next plans |
| What works | Texts, photos, location sharing and select apps such as WhatsApp, Google Maps, AccuWeather and AllTrails |
| Coverage | Continental US, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, parts of southern Alaska and some countries abroad, outdoors only |
| Emergency | Text to 911 by satellite, free, even for people on other carriers with eligible phones |
| Phones | Most smartphones from the last four years |
You do not need to change any settings. Your phone connects to a satellite on its own when no other network is around. However, you need a clear view of the sky, and messages can take longer to arrive. Voice calls to 911 are not supported.

Satellite texting on iPhone and Pixel
Apple runs its own system. According to Apple Support, Messages via satellite works on iPhone 14 or later with iOS 18 or later. It is available in the US, Canada, Mexico and Japan. It is free for two years after you activate the phone.
You can send texts, emoji and Tapbacks, but not photos, videos or group messages. A message takes about 30 seconds to send in ideal conditions. Apple also says this feature is not for emergencies. For that, it points users to Emergency SOS via satellite.
Google takes a different route. Its Pixel help page says Satellite SOS works on Pixel 9 and later, except the Pixel 9a. It covers the US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Australia and most of Europe, including the UK. You dial your local emergency number, then choose Satellite SOS if no network is available.
One detail matters for T Mobile users. Since iPhone 14 and later have Apple’s emergency service built in, they are not eligible for T Mobile’s Text to 911 by satellite.
What T Mobile customers should do after the T Mobile SpaceX deal news
- First, open the T Life app and check if T Satellite is on your line, and whether you pay $10 for it.
- Next, confirm your phone is supported on T Mobile’s support pages before a trip.
- Also, Pixel owners can run the Satellite SOS demo under Settings, then Safety and emergency.
- In addition, iPhone users should turn on iMessage before going off grid, as Apple advises.
- Finally, do not switch carriers over headlines. SpaceX has not announced a launch date for its own consumer phone plan.

Bottom line
The T Mobile SpaceX deal for a wholesale network is off for now, but T Satellite stays. The real story is that SpaceX is buying spectrum and may become a mobile rival. Watch for any FCC decisions and launch news before you change anything.
