The Android 17 update is now on millions of phones, but the rollout looks very different depending on your brand. Pixel phones got Android 17 in June 2026, Samsung started its One UI 9 rollout in September, and other makers are still working through their lists. In this guide, we explain which phones have the Android 17 update, which ones are still waiting, the best new features, the AI tools that came with it and how to install it safely.
Android 17 Update: Release Date and Rollout
Google released stable Android 17 to Pixel phones in the June 2026 Pixel Drop, starting on 16 June 2026. Then, on 15 September 2026, the first quarterly update, called Android 17 QPR1, arrived on Pixels with small design touches such as blur effects in menus and a media player that resizes.
For other phones, Google says eligible devices get Android 17 “throughout 2026”, on each maker’s own schedule. In other words, your brand decides when you get it, not Google.

Best New Features in the Android 17 Update
Bubbles for any app
Any app can now open in a small floating window and shrink into a bubble. As a result, you can reply to a message or check a map without leaving what you are doing. On foldables and tablets, a bubble bar keeps these apps easy to reach.
Better privacy controls
Android 17 gives you more control over your data. For example, you can give an app your precise location just once. Similarly, when an app asks for your contacts, you can share only selected people instead of your whole list.
Stronger theft protection
The “Mark as lost” feature now supports biometric locking, and the phone slows down repeated failed unlock attempts. In addition, Live Threat Detection and Advanced Protection Mode help guard against harmful apps and scams.
Quick Share with AirDrop
Quick Share now works with Apple’s AirDrop on more Pixel phones. So sharing photos with iPhone friends is finally simple.
Small but useful extras
The screen recorder can add your front camera in a corner, which is handy for reaction or tutorial videos. Gamers also get button remapping for game controllers.
AI Features That Came With the Android 17 Update
Some of the most talked about AI tools arrived alongside Android 17 through Pixel Drops and Gemini updates:
- Gemini Intelligence: hands off multistep tasks across apps, such as turning a shopping list into a cart, while showing live progress. It is rolling out in waves on Pixel and Galaxy phones.
- Magic Cue: suggests helpful info inside apps and now works in Snapchat, Telegram and Instagram.
- Gemini Live: lets you share your camera or screen and ask questions about what you see.
These features show where phones are heading: assistants that act for you, not just answer questions. If that idea is new to you, our guide on what an AI agent is explains it simply.
The October 2026 Android 17 Update
Google’s October update brings the 5 October 2026 security patch. It adds no new features. Instead, it fixes three problems: distorted audio in internet calls on Pixel 8 to 10, the keyboard not appearing in search fields on Pixel 8 to 11, and wrong photo orientation on Pixel 11.
Pixel 6 support is ending
Google confirmed that the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro reach end of life after Android 17 QPR1, with security support expected to end in October 2026. However, the Pixel 6a keeps getting updates until July 2027. If you own a Pixel 6 or 6 Pro, it is a good time to plan an upgrade.
How to Install the Android 17 Update
