An Intel Core Ultra laptop can mean three very different generations of chips. Some are great AI machines that support every Copilot+ feature in Windows. Others carry the same “Core Ultra” badge but have a small NPU that misses those features entirely. So before you buy, it helps to know which series you are looking at. This guide explains Series 1, Series 2 and Series 3 in plain words, shows how to read the chip name, and helps you pick the right Intel Core Ultra laptop for your needs.
What Is an Intel Core Ultra Laptop?
Intel launched the Core Ultra brand in late 2023 to replace the old Core i5 and Core i7 names. Every Core Ultra chip combines CPU cores, Intel Arc graphics and an NPU, which is a small engine built for AI tasks. The NPU runs jobs like background blur, live captions and noise removal while using very little power.
However, the NPU size changed a lot between generations. That matters because Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC features, such as Recall and Click to Do, need an NPU rated at 40 TOPS or more. As a result, an older Core Ultra laptop can look modern on paper and still miss these features.
Series 1 (Meteor Lake): The First Generation
Series 1 chips arrived in December 2023 with names like Core Ultra 7 155H. Their NPU is rated at roughly 11 TOPS. These laptops are fast for everyday work and often cheap today. Even so, they are not Copilot+ PCs, so treat them as normal laptops rather than AI laptops.
Series 2: Two Very Different Chips
Series 2 is where buyers get confused most, because it contains two families with very different AI power.
Core Ultra 200V (Lunar Lake)
These chips, such as the Core Ultra 7 258V, put the memory right on the chip package and include an NPU of up to 48 TOPS. They are Copilot+ PCs with excellent battery life. The trade off is memory: you get 16GB or 32GB, and you can never upgrade it.
Core Ultra 200H and 200U (Arrow Lake)
These chips, such as the Core Ultra 9 285H, focus on CPU speed. However, their NPU is rated at only about 13 TOPS, so they do not qualify as Copilot+ PCs. Many gaming and workstation laptops use them alongside a separate Nvidia graphics card.
Series 3 (Panther Lake): The 2026 Chips
Intel introduced Core Ultra Series 3 at CES on 5 January 2026, and laptops began shipping in late January. These are the first laptop chips built on Intel’s 18A process. Here are the key points:
- NPU: up to 50 TOPS, comfortably above the Copilot+ bar.
- CPU: from 6 up to 16 cores.
- Graphics: top “X” models such as the Core Ultra X9 388H and X7 368H use Arc B390 graphics with 12 Xe3 cores. Most other models use a smaller 4 core GPU, while the Core Ultra 5 338H uses Arc B370 graphics with 10 Xe3 cores.
- Total AI power: Intel quotes up to 180 platform TOPS across CPU, GPU and NPU combined.
- Memory: support for much larger amounts than Lunar Lake, so 32GB and 64GB laptops are common.
Reviewers have praised Series 3 for strong battery life and the best Intel integrated graphics so far. In addition, the big Arc B390 GPU often does more AI work than the NPU, because it handles heavier jobs much faster.
How to Read an Intel Core Ultra Chip Name
Intel’s names follow a pattern, and a few letters tell you a lot.
| Example | Series | What the letters mean | Copilot+? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core Ultra 7 155H | Series 1 | 100 numbers, H for performance | No |
| Core Ultra 7 258V | Series 2 (Lunar Lake) | 200 numbers, V for memory on package | Yes |
| Core Ultra 9 285H | Series 2 (Arrow Lake) | 200 numbers, H for performance | No |
| Core Ultra 7 356H | Series 3 | 300 numbers, H for performance | Yes |
| Core Ultra X9 388H | Series 3 | X for the big Arc B390 GPU | Yes |
There is one more trap. In April 2026, Intel added Wildcat Lake, a lower cost version of Panther Lake for budget laptops. It is sold as Core Series 3, without the Ultra badge, so the names look very similar. Its NPU is rated at roughly 17 TOPS, which is below the Copilot+ bar. Therefore, always check the NPU rating of the exact chip on Intel’s Core Ultra product page before you pay.
Which Intel Core Ultra Laptop Should You Buy?
For students and office work
A Core Ultra 5 or Core Ultra 7 from Series 3 is the best choice in 2026. Lunar Lake laptops are also great value now, especially with 32GB of memory. Either way, you get full Copilot+ support and long battery life.
For creators and casual gamers
Look for a Core Ultra X7 or X9 with Arc B390 graphics. It handles photo editing, light video work and many games at 1080p without a separate graphics card. For heavy 3D work, choose a laptop with an Nvidia RTX GPU instead; our RTX 5090 laptop guide covers the top end.
For local AI and developers
Memory matters more than the chip badge here. Choose 32GB at minimum and 64GB if you plan to run large models offline. Our guide on how to run AI locally shows which models fit in which amount of memory.
Intel Core Ultra Laptop vs AMD and Snapdragon
Series 3 reaches 50 TOPS, while AMD’s top Ryzen AI 400 chip reaches 60 TOPS and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X2 chips go up to 80 TOPS. In daily use, however, these gaps rarely change how a laptop feels. Intel and AMD both run standard x86 Windows, so every app and game works as normal. For a full look at AMD’s side, read our Ryzen AI laptop guide, and for the basics, see what is an AI PC.
Quick Checklist Before You Buy
- Check the series: 300 numbers mean Series 3, 200V means Lunar Lake.
- Avoid 200H, 200U and Series 1 chips if you want Copilot+ features.
- Look for the X prefix if you want strong built in graphics.
- Choose 32GB of RAM if your budget allows, since many models cannot be upgraded.
- Read reviews for battery life, because laptop makers tune the same chip very differently.
FAQ
Is every Intel Core Ultra laptop an AI PC?
No. Every Core Ultra chip has an NPU, but only Lunar Lake (200V) and most Series 3 chips pass the 40 TOPS bar for Copilot+ features. Series 1 and Arrow Lake chips do not, and neither does Wildcat Lake (Core Series 3 without Ultra).
Is Core Ultra Series 3 worth it over Lunar Lake?
For most people, yes. Series 3 offers more cores, stronger graphics and more memory options. Still, a discounted Lunar Lake laptop with 32GB remains a smart, cheaper buy.
Can an Intel Core Ultra laptop run ChatGPT style AI offline?
Yes. Free tools such as Ollama and LM Studio run small models on a Core Ultra laptop with 16GB to 32GB of RAM. Larger models need more memory and run best on the GPU.
